Medication Assisted Treatment Nashua, NH
In the best of circumstances, ending opioid or alcohol addiction is a difficult, painful process. In the most challenging of circumstances, the addictions are almost impossible to overcome. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is often a critical tool that, when combined with therapy and other supports, can help a person enter into and maintain recovery. If you or someone you know might benefit from Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) services, contact us today to learn more about how we can help.
What Is Medication Assisted Treatment and How Does It Work?
Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) is a proven, effective treatment that helps individuals with substance use disorders sustain recovery by combining pharmaceutical and behavioral therapies to address the biological and psychological effects of addiction. In MAT, clients receive medication, sometimes daily or monthly, that curbs cravings and the body’s need for opioids or alcohol. For many, it reduces:
Relapse, compared to abstinence-only (“going cold turkey”)
Cravings
Anxiety
Sleep disturbances
Our MAT team and treatment facility, comprised of Medical Doctors and Advanced Nurse Practitioners, licensed alcohol and drug counselors, licensed social workers, medical assistants, and recovery support workers, structures treatment to meet the patient’s needs or goals. We utilize various methods to help our clients achieve recovery and ensure long-term access.
To facilitate better treatment outcomes, patients may be encouraged to pursue other treatments, such as:
Residential rehab treatment
Outpatient counseling or behavioral therapy
Intensive Outpatient treatment
Patients in these programs have access to MAT.
Our Treatment Medications
Suboxone. This medication is a combination of buprenorphine and naloxone. It helps manage opioid dependence by reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms and allows for a more manageable and effective recovery process.
Subutex. Predominantly containing buprenorphine, Subutex is utilized in the early stages of opioid addiction treatment. It acts on the same receptors as opioids, reduces cravings, and relieves withdrawal symptoms without producing the same high.
Vivitrol. Administered as a monthly injection, Vivitrol contains naltrexone, which blocks the euphoric and sedative effects of drugs like opioids and alcohol. It is used to prevent relapse after opioid detoxification and to treat alcohol dependence.
Subclade. Sublocade is an extended-release form of buprenorphine, delivered through a monthly injection. It provides a consistent release of medication, aiding in the treatment of opioid use disorder by maintaining steady medication levels, thus preventing cravings and facilitating sustained recovery.
We Offer Flexible Payment Options
Thanks to the support of many donors and funders, we offer care to all those in need, including those without insurance or ability to pay for services, using a sliding fee scale based on income. We accept most insurances, including Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance. Please contact us with any questions about insurance or payment, or to schedule an appointment with our Patient Navigator, who can help you understand and apply for any insurance you may be eligible to receive.
What Are the Benefits of Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)?
Enhances Safety and Reduces Opioid Overdose Risk
Medication-assisted treatment significantly decreases the risk of fatal overdoses associated with opioid addiction. By stabilizing brain chemistry and blocking the euphoric effects of opioids, medications can help patients maintain physical health while reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms. This intervention is just a part of a comprehensive treatment plan and a cornerstone in the fight against the opioid crisis.
Supports Long-Term Recovery
MAT addiction treatment supports long-term recovery by combining medications with counseling and behavioral therapies, promoting a "whole-patient" approach in treatment programs. This proves effective in not only managing withdrawal from drugs but also in addressing underlying behavioral issues and mental health disorders. Using various methods, MAT provides a strong foundation for sustained recovery and helps individuals rebuild their responsibilities and lead fruitful lives.
Improves Treatment Retention Rates
Patients receiving MAT treatment often show higher retention rates in addiction treatment programs. By curbing cravings and minimizing withdrawal symptoms, MAT helps individuals stay engaged with their treatment plan and reduces the likelihood of relapse. High retention rates are crucial for effective treatment of substance misuse, as prolonged engagement in supportive and treatment services facilitates better outcomes.
Aids in Resocialization and Reduces Criminal Activity
Medication-assisted therapy helps individuals reintegrate into society by stabilizing their condition and allowing them to focus on recovery support services and community activities. Patients are less likely to engage in drug-seeking behavior or criminal activity, which facilitates a smoother transition to everyday community life.
Provides a Bridge to Comprehensive Treatment
For many, MAT is an initial step towards addiction recovery, serving as a bridge to more intensive levels of care like outpatient treatment or short-term and long-term residential treatment. It allows medical professionals to manage and monitor withdrawal symptoms in a controlled environment and smoothen the transition into comprehensive treatment programs.
Reduces Reliance on Illegal Drugs and Prescription Painkillers
MAT reduces reliance on the use of illegal drugs and misuse of prescription drugs. By providing controlled doses of FDA-approved medications, MAT helps manage addiction to drugs like heroin in a safe, measured way. Licensed professionals play a crucial role in administering and monitoring medications as part of drug rehab and recovery services.
Personalized to Individual Needs
Every patient requires a unique, health-based approach to recovery that addresses their specific circumstances, including any co-occurring mental health disorders. Medication-assisted treatment can be personalized to fit individual counseling needs and other therapeutic requirements to ensure each individual receives the most effective support tailored to their recovery journey.

What Is Rehab Treatment?
Rehabilitation treatment, commonly known as rehab, is a specialized program designed to help individuals overcome substance abuse and addiction. It is a structured process that combines various therapeutic modalities to address the physical, psychological, and emotional aspects of addiction. Rehab aims to provide individuals with the tools and skills they need to achieve long-term recovery and improve their quality of life.
Who Needs Rehab Treatment?
Individuals Struggling With Substance Abuse. Rehab treatment is essential for those who are addicted to drugs or alcohol and need professional help to overcome their dependency and regain control of their lives.
Individuals With Co-Occurring Mental Health Disorders. People with both substance abuse issues and mental health disorders, such as depression or anxiety, require specialized treatment in a rehab setting to address both conditions simultaneously.
Those Who Have Attempted to Quit Unsuccessfully. Suppose someone has tried to quit using drugs or alcohol on their own but has been unsuccessful or experienced relapses. In that case, rehab treatment provides a structured environment and comprehensive support to increase their chances of success.
Individuals With Worsening Physical or Mental Health. When substance abuse starts impacting an individual's physical health, such as causing organ damage or cognitive impairments, rehab treatment can help address these specific issues and restore overall well-being.
People in Destructive or Dangerous Environments. Suppose someone is surrounded by negative influences, enabling individuals, or living in an environment that encourages substance abuse. In that case, rehab provides the opportunity to remove themselves from these situations and develop healthier coping strategies.

Qualifications & Cost
Individual recovery centers have their own policies, but none charge for services.
Rockingham County Drug Court
Drug Courts offer an alternative to prison sentencing for drug-related offenses. Rather than prison time, participants get substance abuse treatment and additional supports in a supervised manner. The program is extremely effective, and provides the rehabilitation services clients need to get well.
How It Works
In partnership with the NH Department of Justice, Harbor Care and Keystone Hall work with the Rockingham County Drug Court to provide treatment services that are appropriate for clients and that comply with court orders.
New Hampshire’s Drug Courts redirect individuals from the prison system to treatment services. Under the supervision of a judge and parole officer, participants meet recovery workers, while they live and work in the community. Connected with their families and others supports, participants are much more capable of sustaining life-long recovery.
Given the expense of prison, Drug Courts are seen not only as a compassionate alternative, but a cost-effective one as well. Over the last decade, nearly every county of New Hampshire has adopted a drug court program.
Location
Services are typically provided in Rockingham County.
Qualifications & Cost
The Rockingham Drug Court Program serves individuals sentenced to that program. It does not cost anything for participants. For further information, call Harbor Care Health & Wellness Center at 603-821-7788.
